(FDA’s Persecution of Natural Health, Part I)
(SilverBulletin e-News Magazine) Ron Paul once observed that “when you have a dictatorship or an authoritarian government, truth becomes treasonous”. Though Dr. Paul was talking about NSA spying revelations, he could just as easily been talking about the medical dictatorship in our country by big medicine and the way truths about natural healing are persecuted as crimes by the FDA. When the truth becomes a lie and natural healing is persecuted and prosecuted by government on behalf of the medicine industry, then real healthcare is in serious jeopardy.

The FDA strictly prohibits supplement manufacturers from making claims that a product prevents, cures or improves a disease condition or its associated symptoms. Further, the FDA has determined that only an FDA-approved medicine can make such claims and that any supplement or other item which makes such claims automatically makes the item such claims are associated with “unapproved medicines” which much go through the FDA approval process – at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. However, it is important to note that such prohibitions are not according to actual constitutional law but rather according to arbitrary administrative rules enacted and published by the FDA. Such administrative rules are often referred to as “”color of law” rules.
So zealous has the FDA been in its enforcement of its “color of law” rules, that it has prohibited and persecuted supplement manufacturers from publishing true health claims backed up by both historical observation and scientific studies. In one notable example, the FDA and state law officials made a storm trooper raid to shut down a maker of Charantia (bitter melon) tea in Florida because they dared to put references in their advertisements to some of the 650 plus PubMed studies and citations about bitter melon on their website which vouched for the effectiveness of bitter melon.
In another example, the FDA sent warning letters and threatened raids against 29 cherry growing companies when they began to cite scientific research about the anti-inflammatory properties of tart cherries. According to the FDA, the cherries became “medicines” once health claims for a disease were associated with the product.
So ridiculous and stringent is the FDA that one of their representatives said that water could be considered to be a medicine if it was advertised to cure or treat dehydration. Don’t laugh – it has already happened in Europe.
There are scores of other examples of FDA persecution and raids on products which actually worked and which made truthful health claims dating all the way back to the 1950′s. Perhaps such zealousness would be understandable if supplements had a history of causing large scale death and harm, but such is not the case. In any given year there are no deaths reported due to herbs, vitamins, minerals and other dietary supplements while at the same time the side effects from FDA-approved medications result in an estimated 250,000 deaths in hospitals and homes around the country.
According to data collected and released by the UK-based Alliance for Natural Health International (ANH-Intl), pharmaceutical medicines are 62,000 times more likely to kill you than supplements. In fact, the data collected by ANH-Intl demonstrates that food supplements are the safest substances regularly consumed by citizens even though they are the target of increasingly restrictive enforcement actions aimed at ‘protecting consumers.’
So what gives? Why does the FDA so zealously pursue supplement makers and items such as natural fruits and raw milk when it appears that their efforts would be much better spent regulating the medicines they have already approved? The answer is that what the FDA does and who it really serves is very different than what much of the public believes. Dr. Herbert Ley, considered to be the last FDA Commissioner who was not under the influence of the big medicine companies, summed it up succinctly when he stated:
“The thing that bugs me is that people think the FDA is protecting them. It isn’t. The FDA ‘protects’ the big medicine companies and are subsequently rewarded, and using the government’s police powers they attack those who threaten the big medicine companies. People think that the FDA is protecting them.
What the FDA is doing and what the public thinks it is doing are as different as night and day.”
How did this happen? The simple answer is greed and lust for profits – and Big Medicine is one of the biggest and most profitable enterprises on earth, by some estimates making a combined income of $1 Trillion a year. Big Medicine views our bodies as their own individual profit centers. Our bodies are, in fact, their only market place and it is a market that they guard most jealously.
