There Are Safe Natural Alternatives to Dangerous Antibiotics

Dec. 6, 2018; by Briana McDonald ( As a country, we use a lot of antibiotics. They are prescribed for almost everything even at an early age, which is a little scary. Most of these prescriptions are a “just in case” prescription when a person may not really need them. The dangers in this are that when you kill off bad bacteria you are also inevitably killing off the “good” guys too. There are safe natural alternatives to dangerous Antibiotics; let’s take a look.

To make your own decisions about you health, you have to be well informed. Informed consent around medical interventions means exploring the risks, benefits and alternatives. We have been so programmed to believe that if we have an infection, of any kind viral or bacterial, that antibiotics are the answer. We react out of fear in the false promise that “this will get me feeling better the fastest.” The truth is we have safer alternatives that can not only help us feel better faster, but do less harm in the process.

Antibiotic Overuse Presents Real Problems

Antibiotic overuse is a real problem which most people fail to understand why. Antibiotic overuse has led to the growth of drug-resistant strains of bacteria. Each year 90,000 Americans die from health care-associated infections, many of which are drug resistant. (1) This number is only growing from 1993 to 2005 the number of hospital stays involving MRSA went up from 1900 to 368,000 in the United States alone! Deaths due to clostridium difficle bacteria known as C. diff went up by 35 percent each year from 1999 to 2004. (2)

Doctors and health care providers prescribed 258 million courses of antibiotics in 2010 alone, for a population just under 309 million this means to 833 antibiotic prescriptions for every 1000 people. These scripts were most frequently written for children under 10 and adults 60 and over. Most of these antibiotics were for azithromycin which is used for bronchitis symptoms. However, since bronchitis is usually caused by a virus, antibiotics are not even helpful against these invaders. (3)

Gut Health

The overuse of antibiotics also affects the function of our immune system since at least 70% of the immune system is in your gut. This is where the “good” bacteria help protect from outside invaders so you can stay feeling your best. Think about it, over 100 trillion bacterial cells live inside your body, a lot of them working full time to keep you healthy. These “good” guys are called Probiotics, and studies are showing us that they are connected to everything from proper digestion to a healthy immune system.

So if we are killing off all these good guys too when we take prescription antibiotics then we are crippling our immune system a little more every time as well. In the long run this is not the best approach. Instead we want to focus on what can help support our immune system and not kill off so many good guys.

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver, despite some of the misinformation floating around online, is a completely safe and natural antibiotic alternative. Silver is not only an antibiotic, but also an antiviral, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial in general. It will kill any single cell organism on contact; period. Silver effectually interrupts the bacteria cell’s ability to form the chemical bonds essential to its utilization of and metabolism of oxygen. When single celled organisms/germs meet silver they literally die.

“The bactericidal happens by oxidizing the anaerobic pathogenic bacteria. They die within short periods mentioned above and don’t hang around long enough to figure out what happened and how to resist the silver. The silver ions act as catalysts to oxidize the bacteria, then continues to hunt down more.”

This is why for instance silver bandages are in such high demand right now. They not only kill any bacteria present but prevent more from growing and increase healing time making them extremely valuable to burn and wound victims. Silver has also been proven to promote the growth of new cells which is another reason wounds heal much quicker with Silver present and unlike other metals with antimicrobial properties, it is not toxic for humans. (4)

Research on silver also suggest that it does not harm healthy bacteria in the gut due to its positive charge which only attracts the negative charge of unhealthy bacteria. (5) Long term use still suggests the use of Probiotics several hours after use to be on the safe side.

Garlic contains at least 33 sulfur compounds like aliin, allicin, ajoene, allylpropl, diallyl, trisulfid, sallylycesteine, vinyldithiines and others. Besides sulfur compounds, garlic contains 17 amino acids and their glycosides, arginine and others. Minerals such as selenium and enzymes like allinase, peroxidases, myrosinase, and others all make this food a real super food. The most potent compound garlic has is allicin, which does not exist in garlic until it is crushed or cut. Injury to the garlic bulb activates the enzyme allinase which metabolizes alliin to allicin. This compound has many antimicrobial effects against many viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. (6)

Garlic has proven to be beneficial for a wide range of infections and illnesses including:

  • common colds
  • Influenza
  • fungal skin infections
  • STD’s (including genital warts)
  • Lyme disease
  • Pneumonia
  • Candidiasis
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • yeast infections
  • intestinal parasites
  • Meningitis
  • Herpes

It has even shown promise for destroying three “nightmare superbugs” created from the overuse of antibiotics and can help prevent food poisoning by killing E. coli and salmonella.

Goldenseal, also called “orange root” is a perennial herb native to eastern US and southeastern Canada. The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine lists goldenseal as “one of the most effective of herbal antimicrobial agents” Vaginal and bladder infections are completely wiped out by goldenseal along with sinus infections and the flu. The active compound in this herb called “berberine” has been shown to inhibit the adherence to human cells so they cannot infect them. It is also thought to be effective in treating strep throat and gum disease.

Coconut Oil

At this point, I do not know what Coconut oil is not good for! Research shows that coconut oil has antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties in the medium chain fatty acids/triglyucerides found in the oil. The lauric acid found in the fat of coconut oil converts lauric acid into monolaurin and gives it its healing properties. Monolaurin is classified as a monoglyceride which has the ability to eliminate viruses coated with fat such as HIV, herpes, and different strains of disease causing bacteria. (7)

Oil pulling has become a common practice which helps to remove bacteria, clean and whiten your teeth, prevent gum disease and repair cavities!

What’s also great about these safe antibiotic alternatives is you can combine the use of them for quicker healing and not have to worry about negative side affects!
