Natural Stress and Anxiety Relief Without Drugs

Oct. 15, 2018; by Briana McDonald ( When it comes to stress, we all respond differently. Some of us have used it as fuel to push ourselves, become stronger and more adaptable while some of us struggle to make sense of it and feel our minds spiraling out of control when it creeps on. If you are one of the 40 million adults in the United States that suffer with anxiety I come to you offering great news. There are amazing natural stress and anxiety relief without drugs and they won’t break your bank account.

 Anxiety Disorder
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America people with an anxiety disorder are three to five times more likely to go to the doctor and six times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders than those who do not suffer from anxiety disorders. They can develop from a complex sex of risk factors including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, life events, and diet and lifestyle choices. (1) [Very Important: Many, if not most, people suffering from “anxiety disorders” do not have psychological issues, but rather are deficient in key minerals, especially magnesium.]
Stress: A Major Health Problem in the United States
I have a dear friend who made a move with her new husband to Spain about 6 months ago. She owns her own counseling center here in the states and travels every so often to check in on her team but does most of her business remotely. After spending months in Spain in the slow lane, eating fresh food from the markets and walking almost everywhere she realized how radically different the United States was from Europe. When she came back to work with her colleagues for a couple of weeks her anxiety levels were through the roof. Taking a step away made her realize how unnecessarily fast she was living her life here in the states, as if it were a race. She had to catch herself when she started to feel overwhelmed and make herself take deep breaths and slow down.
Why is it that we feel this rushed? This stressed? Stress has a negative impact on both personal and professional lives yet we have very little skills on how to mange it properly. Mismanaged stress can take years off of your life, emotional stress is especially damaging. When we finally reach out for help, go to our doctor and get a “magic pill” to try and fix it all without looking at the root of our suffering.
With this fast pace lifestyle we have to realize we are
1. not listening to our bodies
2. eating out too often and skimping on true nourishment
3. always rushing
4. getting in bed too late
5. not drinking enough water during the day
This is the perfect equation to a depleted human organism. One that needs loaded up on some serious nutrition to start feeling better again. Let’s look at some supplements that relieve stress fast and get the ball rolling in the right direction.
Supplements That Relieve Stress
B Vitamins
When we need energy and help handling stress, B vitamins, including B12 and folate are important for your metabolism, supporting cellular processes, growth and energy expenditure, preventing fatigue, and boosting cognitive functions. (2) Clinical trials have also shown that supplementing with a Vitamin B complex can help reduce personal strain and depressed feelings when in high stress situations. It supports the feeling of calm and stability and can even help you in areas of focus.
Used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, the entire plant from roots to seeds has medicinal qualities especially when it comes to reducing stress. The benefits stretch far and wide, but when it comes to reducing stress it takes the cake. One study from 2017 showed a 44% reduction in stress levels after taking Ashwagandha as opposed to just a 5.5% decrease in the group taking a placebo. (3) A randomized 2012 study showed impressive stress reduction after just 60 days. (4)
Also known as “Golden Root” Rhodiola has been used since ancient times for energy enhancement, improve mood and reduce stress. A 2009 double blind study on Rhodiola was shown to reduce stress and increase alertness in doctors on night shifts. (5)
Magnesium is one of my most favorite minerals as it is essential for proper nervous system function and muscle recovery. Many studies have shown that magnesium is crucial for sleep and since most American’s do not get enough from diet alone, supplementation is very important. Taking magnesium regularly will help you better deal with stress, digest your food properly, sleep better, and live better overall as your body requires magnesium for over 300 biochemical processes.

Valerian Root
Valerian root is another medicinal herb that has been used to help with nervousness, anxiety and sleep disturbances since the dawn of time. Much evidence demonstrates that supplementing with this herb can greatly help to reduce stress and support quality sleep due to its calming and sedative effect. One of the number one triggers for stress is lack of sleep so that is the best place to start when trying to get your stress levels down. (6)
Kava Kava
There have been numerous human studies on Kava that prove its effectiveness in the treatment of anxiety regardless of symptom or type of anxiety disorder. Kava activates GABA-A receptors which produces a calming effect and also helps prevent a decrease in norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine levels by inhibiting monoamine oxidase and relaxes muscles by decreasing beta adrenaline receptor activity. CBD Oil
CBD oil is one of the best things for treating anxiety and a host of other ailments. It also helps to reduce pain and inflammation and even can reverse neuropathy symptoms in diabetic patients! (My dad is living proof!) It does this because it prevents the hippocampus from producing neurons and allows fewer but stronger neurons to stay active in the brain. This relieves anxiety and regulates brain function. CBD also activates adenosine receptors which actives the neurotransmitters dopamine and glutamate. Dopamine regulates our emotions but activates our reward and pleasure emotions. Glutamate increase leads to increased memory, cognition and heightens our learning senses. Both of which decrease anxiety and increase levels of happiness. CBD oil also activates a major neurotransmitter: serotonin and low serotonin is linked to depression and anxiety. (8)
