Before we lived in a world of excess, our ancestors would often go days between meals and this was very normal. Fasting in itself isn’t the “cure all” answer, but what it does do is creates the environment where healing can take place. Our bodies are self healing, self regenerating, we need only to step aside and let it do what it does best. During fasting, we let our digestive system rest from the constant bombardment of food stuff. Imagine it like this; you are at work and your boss has just given you several large assignments which you know you can handle, but it’s going to take you several hours to file all the paperwork in its proper place, alphabetize and call everyone you need to call. Before you’re even finished with the first assignments, your boss comes in with another, then a couple hours later another, and so on and so forth until you feel completely overwhelmed and bogged down. You will most likely prioritize your work and take care of the most important stuff first, then leaving the unimportant stuff for another day. Your body is no different.
When you fast, you are giving your body a precious gift, a vacation from the strenuous workload it usually endures and time to focus on working on the things it usually “sets aside” for another day. Your body uses approximately 65% of its energy to process and eliminate food. Free up this energy and it can be redirected to healing and recuperation. The miracle of fasting is accomplished by self digestion. During a fast your body intuitively will decompose and burn only substances and tissues that are damaged, diseased or unneeded, such as abscesses, tumors, excess fat deposits (which toxins are stored) excess water and congestive body wastes!

Even the great Greek philosophers in 83 A.D. like Plutarch and Paracelsus praised fasting and made claims such as: “Instead of medicine, fast for one day” and “seek the physician within You!” The hunger pangs and detoxification effects usually cease after the first 2-3 days, afterwards is a feeling of lightness, more energy, and a new outlook on life. You naturally become more in touch with yourself and the world around you without unhealthy attachments to “worldly” things. The gaze within is more focused, like a laser beam, and there is a peace and tranquility that naturally arises from the Spirit. Each experience is deeply personal and unique to the individual so do not expect to have the same experience as a friend or loved one.
How to Start:
Although a pure water fast is best, an introductory liquid juice fast can be a great way to start to experience the relief the body feels when it’s given a break from commercial high fat, high sugar, high salt, and high protein fast food. Also, you can reap a lot of benefits by fasting for a 24 hour period one day out of each week instead of doing longer fasting periods, but if you are interested in doing 3 days, 5 days, or even up to 4 weeks, there is a wealth of information online you can research different forms of fasting until you find one that is right for you.
To experience the miracle of fasting for yourself, a few days prior to your fast be sure to eat healthy, wholesome foods, avoiding processed and refined sugar and flour and drink plenty of water. This will help ease the Detox effects once you begin your fast and help it to be a little more enjoyable. After your fast, be sure to slowly introduce solids choosing again, wholesome, fresh fruits and vegetables.
