October 2, 2017; by Briana McDonald, Staff Writer; Silver Bulletine-News Magazine (UtopiaSilver.com) Turmeric may seem like a foreign subject to you or you may be aware of it’s recent hype in the health industry as more research comes to surface about it’s powerful healing components. Turmeric is used more commonly than one may think. It is a primary ingredient in most Indian dishes, it’s used in mustard to add color, and there are a variety of cheeses that are made with turmeric for the added hue. Now that you know you probably consume it more often than you realize, you won’t be so opposed to the idea of juicing turmeric for added health benefits such as reducing osteoarthritis pain, fighting heart disease, promoting digestion and boosting antioxidant levels that keep you feeling fit as a fiddle.
Healing Properties of Turmeric
Turmeric contains bioactive compounds that have powerful medicinal properties called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin. However, the curcumin content of turmeric is not that high, only about 3% by weight so getting it as a spice in your food alone probably won’t make you feel like a million bucks but juicing it would be a whole other story. (1) Fresh turmeric looks just like ginger and is readily available in most grocery stores. It’s easy to implement into the diet and adding it into a juice recipe is as easy as pie.
Juicing Turmeric for Added Health Benefits
Inflammation in the body can be a good thing, but prolonged inflammation in the body can lead to many of the diseases we see in western society today like heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome and various degenerative diseases. Therefore anything that can help keep inflammation at bay can help the body in many ways and is important to incorporate into our daily routines.
Researches have studied groups of individuals who suffer from arthritis pain and found that a regular dosage of turmeric reduced the overall amount of pain from joint impairment. (2) The study confirmed that whole fresh turmeric was just as effective as extracts.
Heart disease is still the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Plaque build up in the arteries does not happen overnight and is a direct result of poor lifestyle choices. Incorporating turmeric into a juicing routine will help to eliminate current plaque build up in the arterial walls and prevent any future plaque build up. It will also help to improve the health of our guts by enriching them with healthy bacteria and enzymes we need to stay healthy and fit.
The importance of healthy digestion can not be overstated especially as 90% of our immune system is in our guts! The foods we consume play a direct role in regulating our immune system and keeping it functioning at optimal levels. Many people turn to juicing to help with digestive issues as it gives the digestive system a much needed break from processing food as nutrients are readily available for the body in this predigested state. Juicing turmeric helps to eliminate bloat and excess gas in the body which will not only help your jeans fit better but make your whole body feel better as well!
Improved Brain Function
We used to believe that neurons were not able to divide and multiply after early childhood however, it is now known that this continues to happen throughout our lives. These neurons are capable of forming new connections in certain areas of the brain and they can increase in number. One of the primary components of this process is brain derived neurotophic factor (BDNF) which is a type of growth hormone that plays an important role in the brain. Most brain disorders have been linked to decreased levels of this hormone including depression and Alzheimer’s disease. Curcumin has also been shown to increase brain levels of this hormone and by doing this it may be effective at delaying or even reversing many brain disorders. (4)
Juicing turmeric for added health benefits is a natural way to keep inflammation down, keep your arterial walls plaque free, improve overall brain function, and keep your digestive system regulated.
