Biologist Rejects GMOs and Fights Hunger a Better Way

( This uncompromised biologist rejects GMOs and fights hunger a better way. Colin Tudge is a biologist, co-founder of The Campaign for Real Farming website, and lecturer. His books include Good Food for Everyone Forever and Why Genes are Not Selfish and People are Nice.

In his introductory paper, “Power, Lies, And Agrarian Resistance” for The Oxford Real Farming Conference in England, Colin cites three major lies that constitute the house of cards foundation of not only GMOs, but all of current industrial farming.

He compares those lies to the hidden truths of what works better than Big Ag and offers them as real solutions to our looming agriculture, food distribution, and soil sustainability crisis.

Lie Number One: We Must Produce More Food

The world already produces more food than necessary. It’s the distribution of food, controlled by a few monolith Big Ag corporations and grain traders, that creates a situation where one billion in third world or developing countries are undernourished while another billion are afflicted with obesity, diabetes, and the gamut of chronic health disorders that plague industrialized nations from eating so much corporate processed foods and monoculture factory farm chemically tainted foods

Food justice is of no interest to the corporations and oligarchs that control agriculture and the food supply. For them, it’s all about short term financial gains and long term power and control. Small to medium regional mixed plant farms with less livestock is the model Colin calls for. And there have been larges scale UN studies that also claim this is the solution.

Lie Number Two: Agro-chemicals and GMOs with Large Scale Farming Are Necessary

This lie is used to erode and ultimately destroy small to medium traditional farms. They’re considered in the way of progress with anti-scientific superstitions and backwards traditions that can’t keep up with the world’s expanding population. And with the help of intertwined fascist governments, they are making progress at destroying small to medium diverse and organic farming.

Traditional farming was replaced during Rockefeller’s Green Revolution of the early 1940s with monstrous plots of grain and other mono-plant farms that needed high volumes of energy and mechanical input input with synthetic fertilizing, herbicides, and pesticides, all of which was fed into the silos and plants of the Cargil type corporate distributors for dispensing to large food manufacturers like General Mills, PepsiCo, Nestle, and others.

Lots of fat cat middle men and manipulating commodity traders are involved in the process of feeding citizens second rate at best and toxic at worst food. Colin says this needs to go slowly as more become aware and take care of food production and distribution within local communities. With better financial assistance and infrastructure, even third world farms can do better than Big Ag.

Colin points out that “… small traditional farms that are so despised and routinely swept aside still produce 50% of the world’s food. The remaining 20% comes from fishing, hunting, and people’s back gardens.” Colin adds that the remaining 30% from industrial farming usurps 80% of government farm subsidies and 90% of research budgets.

By the way, a lot of those household garden plots furnish almost half of Russia’s food supply and virtually all of Cuba’s. This movement has begun in the San Francisco Bay Area with civic approval.

Lie Number Three: Food is Boring Without Meat

The incredible increase in meat demand has resulted in forests being cleared worldwide to raise GMO corn and soy for feeding livestock unnatural toxic diets in crowded infested factory farms, forcing 70 or more percent of all existing pharmaceutical antibiotics to be used on them while being treated poorly and cruelly slaughtered.

Many cultures have survived thousands of years on plant based diets with meat consumed sparingly. When’s the last time you ordered a 12 ounce steak at an authentic Chinese restaurant? Small farms can raise enough livestock humanely to produce sufficient healthier meats locally. The meat three times daily diet is not as necessary as claimed folks.

[Publisher’s Note: Meat can be an essential part of our diet and health beneficial as long as it isn’t fed GMO grains and doesn’t contain anti-biotics and steroids. Therefore if you choose to consume meat, try to stick to range fed. Also, a critical element of good health is maintaining a proper pH balance in the body. The ideal diet for a good body pH generally should be no more than 20% meat and the balance should be fruit and vegetables.]

He is amazed at the ignorance of natural medicine and how beneficial foods and herbs are constantly ignored or vilified in order to promote toxic foods and meds by Big Pharma, the FDA, USDA, and the AMA, what he likes to call the “Medical Mafia”. Paul Fassa sees the struggle for health freedom and the need for improving and preserving our food supply as key issues in today’s crazy world.
